The need for stories

For the past decade, I have lead a youth charity, taught a Bible class, written much about formation (here), and started to raise three children of my own.
During those years, I have been increasingly convinced that we need to be telling our children and young people more stories. Here's why:
We have so many good things to pass on.
We have an inheritance to pass on – a great treasure chest of stories about who we are, where we come from, why we're here and where we're going.
2. There is a battle for our children's attention.
The reality is that our children's attention is being hijacked and hooked online. They are growing up in a world filled with noise, distraction and slop. We have a responsibility to both guard their attention and direct it to worthier things.
Stories are formational.
While God chiefly uses fathers, mothers and ordinary folk to raise, shepherd and encourage children, stories have a huge role to play in their formation. Without preaching at us, stories nevertheless teach: they instruct, warn, inspire, and encourage.
All that is to say that I believe the gathering and telling of great stories has never been more important.
The formation of the next generation is at stake.
